This pilgrimage goes to the heart of Continental Europe where St Columbanus laboured and suffered many hardships for the sake of the Gospel. From his arrival at Luxeuil about 590 AD until his death at Bobbio in 615 AD no earthly power, blandishment or threat caused him to deviate from a single-minded fidelity to Jesus and to the spiritual tradition he had inherited. Today, over fourteen hundred years later his name and fame still live, not just in the faded pages of ancient manuscripts but in the eyes and hearts of the people who pride themselves in the fact that the Irishman was the apostle of their nation.
The pilgrimage embraces the treasured monastic foundations at Luxeuil, Annegray and Fontaines in Burgundy before travelling across Switzerland along the upper Rhine Valley and Lake Constance to Bregenz in the Austrian Alps.
The final stage of the pilgrimage includes Pavia, St Columbano al Lambro, a guided tour of the Bobbio foundation and a drive to the vicinity of the Grotto di San Michelle, where according to tradition, the saint died. There will be an opportunity to celebrate the liturgy at Luxeuil, Bregenz, St Gallen and the tomb of St Columbanus in Bobbio.
